Description

This was 3 days after the coronal mass ejection on July 21st.  SWPC predicted a Level K-Index of 6, a  G2 on the NOAA scale (Moderate). Though the potential impacts were from 55 degrees poleward, we had an excellent show at the 45th parallel for nearly 3 hours. Tough to pick out the best views, but I really liked this higher vertical bands that showed up about halfway into the event. These "picket fence" changes are typical of STEVE phenomena (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), though the characteristic ribbon of pink or mauve light is not visible in this particular shot.   Note the more diffuse and darker green airglow (technically, nightglow) on the left side of the image. I'll share another one that really demonstrates the relationship between the nightglow and the aurora emissions, including more of the STEVE ribbon.
